NVIDIA rolls out an update to the Shield Tablet to fix color reproduction issues

NVIDIA rolled out the 2.2 update last week, bringing more games available to stream to the Shield Tablet, several performance improvements as well as increasing battery life during standby. The update however caused the screen to desaturate colors, with users noting that reds were being muted. NVIDIA has now issued the 2.2.1 hotfix update, which is delivered to rectify the screen calibration issue.

Here's the official changelog from NVIDIA:
  • Display color-space correction
  • Improvements to Netflix experience
The update should now be available on your tablet. We've checked on our Shield Tablet, and colors seemed noticeably brighter. Head into your device's settings to check if one is available, and let us know if it fixes the issues with the screen.

Nexus 7 (2012) Wi-Fi: Android 5.0.2 update now available to download

When it rains, it pours, and such is the collection of confectionery confetti that is flowing down from the Mountain View candy land. Released in October, Android 5.0 landed with the Nexus 9, yet just a few weeks later 5.0.1 was already on its way, a small update to address bugs, but which also included fast and slow-motion video recording.
LRX22G has just been released by Google, which brings the hard candy’s teeth-talking tally to 5.0.2. The update is currently only available for the Nexus 7 (2012) Wi-Fi version. Google has since pulled the device’s 5.0.1 patch.
According to XDA Developers, the 5.0.2 update addresses “issues with MountService which should now start before performBootDexOpt [and] changes related to NAND have also been pushed. Fstrim, introduced in Android 4.3, caused some serious issues on Lollipop… devices with slow NAND should now have a noticeable performance boost.”
Lollipop is definitely shaping up to be the most unusual of all Android releases so far. Google released an unprecedented Developer Preview (Android L) earlier this year, and has now pushed out two patches within a very short span of time. Additionally many users have reported major problems with their older hardware upon updating, especially when it comes to poor power management.
The existence of yet another update will also mean that OEMs desperately scrambling to get their Lollipop builds in order have yet another new version to test when conceivably the original 5.0 still hasn’t been given the green light to push OTA.
If any of our readers feel compelled to manually update, please feel free to share your comments below and let us know if there is any noticeable improvement in the software experience.
The factory image can be found here, and is officially signed by Google. Please note that the Android SDK is required to install it, as is a more advanced understanding of sideloading.

Sony Xperia Phones May Get A Touch Of ‘Exclusive’ Android KitKat Features

Sony Xperia users are in for some good news. Samsung and Apple might be hogging on the limelight but that doesn’t stop the Japanese phone vendor from announcing the coming of the latest Android 4.4.2 to its Xperia smartphones.Of course, the first to receive it will be the latest Xperia Z. Soon after, the Jelly Bean update will reach Xperia SP, T, TX and the V. This KitKat update will give the Z1 the same interface and functions with the Xperia Sirius and Z1.Back during the debut of the Xperia Sirius, users get two home screen options to choose from. This will be axed and replaced by a brand new interface. Following the Xperia Sirius, plenty of camera functions have set the trend with other Xperia devices. This includes the Smart Social Apps, Timeshift video and Background Shift. The Smart App in particular got itself a new look and function like the Close All button. Other key features coming with the KitKat includes the white balance support, smart call handling and double tap to wake up the device. The Sirius will get that extra S Force audio , Clear Audio and xLoud engine.
As for the KitKat, it will allow more customization with the status bar as well as the notification bar. Xperia Z users are surely having something to smile about. This is excluded on the Jelly Bean.
Aside from all that, the KitKat will definitely improve the battery life of the Z1. The update is expected to arrive sometime this year.

To avoid Android pitfalls, Mozilla shoulders Firefox OS update burden

BARCELONA, Spain -- Mozilla will take over some responsibility for issuing Firefox OS updates that carriers today have, a move that could help users avoid the fate of Android phone owners saddled with older operating system versions.
"We are pushing that envelope," Chief Technology Officer Brendan Eich told CNET. "We think we can get people on Wi-Fi upgrading through Mozilla."
That would mean a person could step into an Internet cafe then update the software as soon as Mozilla releases a new version or security fix, rather than waiting for a handset maker to build, test, and release the update through a network operator partner. But, Eich cautioned, "We are not there yet." OS updates are a risky proposition for carriers, which don't want to risk bricked phones and the attendant customer support difficulties.Part of the change is driven by the fact that carriers aren't necessarily going to be in the loop with Mozilla's $25 Firefox OS smartphone, announced this week at Mobile World Congress here. For that phone, people often will buy the phone from a bin at a retail store, Eich said, picking a carrier later.Operating system updates can be a sore point for smartphones. Most Apple customers upgrade operating systems relatively swiftly, but even mid-range Android phones often don't see new versions of the operating system. That leaves customers without new features, makes lives difficult for app developers struggling to support older models, and exposes people to security risks.Firefox  OS risks this problem, too. Although Mozilla issues Firefox OS updates at half the rate it does with Firefox -- every three months instead of every six weeks -- that's still too fast for some. Alcatel skipped the Firefox 1.2 update  because of some problems with the 1.1 update.Firefox OS is still a young challenger in the marketplace, with the first phones going on sale in July 2013 in Spain, but now it's available in 15 markets, chiefly Eastern Europe and Latin America.
"In the next several months, we'll add 12 new markets," said Jay Sullivan, Mozilla's acting chief executive officer, at a press conference at the show Sunday. "Later in the year, we'll have a large focus on Africa and Asia."

Samsung Galaxy S4 now getting Android 4.4 KitKat update in India

Samsung has started rolling out the promised Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for the 2013 flagship Galaxy S4 (GT-I9500). The update has reportedly hit Indian phones according to a post on XDA Developers , but we can confirm that not all Galaxy S4s are seeing it at the moment. Samsung had started seeding the KitKat update for the Exynos 5 Octa-powered S4 earlier this month. The Android 4.4.2 update is shown to clock in at 353.59MB, so it’s advisable to latch on to a strong Wi-Fi connection before attempting the download. Besides the native Android changes, the Galaxy S4 obviously gets a few TouchWiz UI improvements and changes as well.
A glimpse of the new UI
A glimpse of the new UI

We had already got a glimpse of what Samsung had in store with the KitKat update through a leaked build earlier. The final update confirms the changes in UI and white icons in the notification bar, new settings for the launchers, and full-screen album art for the currently playing track on the lock screen. Samsung says it also improved system stability with the update.S4 users will also get to choose their default SMS app when rebooting after installing the update. In addition, Samsung has made changes to the default keyboard, especially in landscape orientation. With KitKat, users will also have granular control over the location services. You can choose to opt for a power-saving mode when not using location actively or employ all sensors when using the Maps app or for navigation. You will also see settings for wireless printing and tap to pay for mobile-enabled payments.

HTC One Android 4.4.2 KitKat Update Set to Continue in the US

After a missed deadline in January to deliver Android 4.4 KitKat to the HTC One, the company quickly announced a new site dedicated to news on updates, and shortly thereafter delivered KitKat to Sprint and Verizon users. However, until today the official software upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat and the new Sense UI 5.5 for the HTC One on AT&T and T-Mobile was still missing. Today though we’ve just learned the update has been approved by both carriers, and should roll out to all users soon. An HTC rep took to Twitter to confirm AT&T, and T-Mobile have both approved the update for launch.
HTC-One-more
Confirming both AT&T and T-Mobile have approved the KitKat and Sense 5.5 release, we can expect them to rollout on both networks to all users over the course of the next few days. As usual, with these types of updates, we can expect a slow and staged rollout. This means you may not get it today, or tomorrow, but it should arrive within the next few weeks.Like we’ve seen with both Sprint and Verizon, this will be the absolute latest and most up-to-date version of Android direct from Google. That being Android 4.4.2 KitKat with all the fixes and patches available today. Then of course HTC is adding some new UI features with Sense 5.5, and fixing device-specific bugs. There’s a new do not disturb mode, the gallery and Blinkfeed have been redesigned and improved throughout, and HTC put tons of effort forward regarding the camera. Mainly for indoors and low light situations, post update users can expect a better camera experience all around.Obviously we can expect a staged rollout after AT&T and T-Mobile get everything finally ready to roll. Users of these devices should be on the lookout for the update to arrive any day now.For those with the HTC One Max, the HTC team recently confirmed on Reddit that they’re targeting a March release date for that large 5.9-inch smartphone, not to mention it’s live now in other regions.. Stay tuned and we’ll update you as any new details or issues arise.

Tmo HTC One update to Android 4.4.2 KitKat finally here

Apologies for grabbing this so late, but for those of you who haven’t already downloaded and installed it, 4.4.2 is finally here for the Magenta-flavored HTC One. It landed late last night, very inconveniently while I was in the middle of travelling to Barcelona for this year’s MWC conference.
As for the update, it marks the start of HTC’s campaign to ensure that all future devices will support the latest software updates, and will receive them for two years after launch. In theory, it’s fantastic for those of you who hate having the uncertainty of whether or not there will be an update to your device’s OS.

If you haven’t already had a notification for the update, head in to your settings menu, and check for software updates manually.

Samsung Galaxy S III may miss out on Android 4.4 KitKat update

Samsung US has released a list including a number of Galaxy devices which will be soon receiving the Android 4.4 KitKat OS update. The list however skips the firm's Galaxy S III handset.

The number of Galaxy devices which will be receiving the updates are Samsung Galaxy Note 3;Galaxy S4; Galaxy S4 Active; Galaxy S4 Mini; Galaxy S4 Zoom; Galaxy Note II; Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition); Galaxy Note 10.1; Galaxy Note 8.0; Galaxy Tab 3 8.0; Galaxy Tab 3 7.0; Galaxy Tab 3 10.1;Galaxy Mega 6.3; Galaxy Mega 5.8; Galaxy Grand and Galaxy Express 2.The news comes from Robert Nawrowski's website, where it has been stated that Samsung Galaxy S III has been missing from the Android 4.4 KitKat update list due to the device's RAM which is 1GB.However, to much surprise, the Samsung Galaxy Grand also comes with 1GB of RAM and is there in queue for the update. Moreover, Android KitKat OS is said to work on devices with just 512MB of RAM, and it supposedly more memory efficient.Additionally, it has been noted that the Samsung Galaxy S III US version will be experiencing the Android 4.4 KitKat experience as it comes with 2GB of RAM.
Last year, it was noted that Samsung Galaxy S III started facing some issues after the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS update.

Reports at the time said that Galaxy S III users were complaining of unresponsive handsets, particularly the lockscreen, after updating the smartphone. Other issues included erratic Wi-Fi connectivity, poor battery backup, and a system hanging problem that requires the battery to be pulled out to restart the smartphone. Hopefully, this would not happen with Android 4.4 KitKat OS update.

Install Android 4.4.2 on the Galaxy S4 I9500: official firmware

It was only a few days ago that we shared a custom ROM for the international Galaxy S4 I9500 with Exynos 5 chipset. Now, the official Android 4.4.2 firmware has been released by Samsung for the Galaxy S4 I9500. If you don’t want to wait for the slow OTA delivery of the firmware in your area, you can flash it right here, right now. Because this is official Samsung firmware there’s no warnings, flash counters, voided warranties or otherwise; pushing the update manually via Kies is no different than waiting for it to arrive over the air, just faster. You’re simply going to pick up that pizza rather than waiting for the delivery man to bring it to you. This is official, final Android 4.4.2 firmware for the Galaxy S4 I9500 with Exynos 5 chipset, dated Thursday February 13th with a build number of I9500XXUFNB3. The firmware is tagged for Russia, but as long as you do not have a carrier-branded S4 you are good to go.
If you want to wait for the OTA version to arrive, simply go to Settings > More, About Phone > Software Updates > Update. I won’t bore you with the changes as I’m sure you know them by now, but if not, check out our video on the Android 4.4.2 features on the Galaxy S4. Alternatively you can push the update to your Galaxy S4 via Kies but you’ll have to wait for your country’s firmware to appear on Sam Mobile’s firmware page. If all this waiting kills you inside a little bit, you can flash the Russian firmware using the steps below as long as your S4 is not carrier-branded.

Install official Android 4.4.2 firmware on Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500

2. Unzip the zip file.
3. Download Odin 3.09, and unpack the .zip also.
4. Launch Odin.
5. Reboot your Galaxy S4 in download mode (Volume Down + Power + Home button).
6. Connect your Galaxy S4 via USB cable to your computer and wait for Odin to recognize it. A blue box should then appear (in the program).
7. Click the AP button and locate the tar.md5 file in the zip package and hit Start.
8. Make sure that the re-partition box is not checked.
9. Click Start and wait a few minutes until the procedure ends. Do not disconnect your S4, be patient.
10. Once your Galaxy S4 restarts, it's over!
As usual, if you have any concerns at startup, perform a wipe data/factory reset in recovery mode (Volume Up + Power + Home button).

Google to Launch Android 4.5 and Nexus 8 in July

On Wednesday, Google’s head of Android and Chrome, Sundar Pichai announced that the Mountain View-based giant will host the I/O 2014 developer conference on June 25-26. In an attempt to find out whether we’ll get to see the next Android iteration at I/O we got in touch with a person familiar with the matter who revealed for us that Google will not introduce Android 4.5 during the aforementioned event.A Google Dublin employee said to us that his superiors have told him that Android 4.5 will be officially unveiled in July along with a new tablet, dubbed Nexus 8. He also confirmed for us that the I/O 2014 conference will focus on new services Google is planning to bring on the market. Our source also mentioned that Google will no longer develop a 7-inch Nexus tablet, because of the heavy competition on the segment. Instead, they will try to focus on the 8-inch segment, where they will have to face a smaller number of competitors. At the moment, the most notable 8-inch tablets on the market are Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8.0 and Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 and LG’s G Pad 8.3.The Google Dublin employee could not reveal more details about the Nexus 8 tablet, but since we are talking about a Nexus device that will be launched synchronized with Android 4.5, I guess it’s safe to assume that the 8 incher will come pre-loaded with the new Android version.Furthermore, sources in Taiwan suggested a few weeks ago that Google will launch an 8-inch Nexus tablet at the end of April with “initial shipments of two million units.” The same report also indicated that Google has once more chosen ASUS to be their partner in the development of the new stock Android-powered tablet.Would you be interested in purchasing an 8-inch Nexus tablet or you prefer the 7-inch models? What about Android 4.5? Are you looking forward towards any particular features?

Sprint Galaxy Note 3 receiving Android 4.4.2 update today [UPDATED]

Sprint's been pretty on the ball when it comes to KitKat updates for its flagship devices, getting out Android 4.4 updates for both its HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S 4 before its competitors. Now it looks like Sprint has won another race to KitKat by pushing out an Android 4.4.2 update to another major smartphone.
Owners of the Sprint version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 report that their update to KitKat is now rolling out, and Sprint's support page for the phablet shows that the push is indeed kicking off today. The update brings the Note 3 up to software version N900PVPUCNAB and includes a bump up to Android 4.4.2 as well as the removal of the Prevention Pop-up.
Considering that the Galaxy Note 3 is one of Samsung's biggest smartphones, both literally and figuratively, it's no surprise that the phablet is getting bumped up to KitKat. What is interesting is that Sprint is pushing the update to its Note 3 before the other big U.S. carriers, as CDMA operators have been known to take longer to update their devices than their GSM counterparts. It's great to see Sprint being speedy with its updates as of late, though, and I'm sure that its subscribers are pretty happy about the whole situation as well.
If you're rocking a Sprint Galaxy Note 3 and haven't yet received your own piece of KitKat, you can check for the update manually by heading into Apps > Settings > General > System Update > Update.
UPDATE: Samsung has posted a more detailed changelog for the Sprint Galaxy Note 3's KitKat update:
  • OS upgrade to Android 4.4.2 (KitKat)
  • New Lock Screen Access
    • Media Controls - full-screen album art and media controls when listening to music
    • Camera Shortcut  - access the Camera application right from the lock screen
    • SMS App Chooser - select a default application for sending and receiving SMS text messages
    • Restyled Status and Navigation Bars - status and navigation bars are translucent and can sit on top of apps, along with simplified status bar icons
  • Consolidated Location Settings - location services are integrated and more detailed by new Location menu
  • Expanded Emoji Icons
  • Wireless Printing – supports printing over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • Prevention Information pop-up message is suppressed.

Samsung 12-inch Galaxy NotePro Android Tablet Hands-on

If there is a screen-size arms race going on, then Samsung dropped the equivalent of a hydrogen bomb at CES when it announced a 12-inch tablet. We recently got a chance to go hands-on with this imposing piece of Android hardware. At this year’s CES, Samsung surprised everyone with the announcement of its new Galaxy Pro series of tablets, with the Galaxy NotePro 12.2 being the star of the show. This 12-inch slateis one of the biggest Android tablets currently available - only Toshiba’s older Excite 13 is bigger. With the addition of the Pro series tablets (which also come in 8.4- and 10.1-inches), Samsung now has a total of eleven tablets in its current line-up, which if you ask us is a little insane. However, when we met with Samsung last week, one of its executives said that he believes in the idea of ‘Device Democracy’ - he wants customers to have the freedom to be able to buy a device in any size they want. Of course, not everyone knows what size they need, so we do think that perhaps Samsung’s tablet selection is a little overwhelming for the average user.

Android 4.4 KitKat Update Is Here: US Cellular Galaxy S4 And Galaxy Note 3 Receive New OS; International Galaxy S4 (GT-I9500) Rollout Also Begins

Several Samsung Galaxy models are now receiving the Android 4.4 KitKat update just days after the Korean manufacturer officially announced its rollout plans.Stateside, the U.S. Cellular Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 models are both now receiving the new operating system, while the international Galaxy S4 is now updating in Russia. After several months of silence, Samsung released a press statement on Tuesday detailing that 14 of its Galaxy brand devices for various carriers would be updating Android 4.4 KitKat.U.S. Cellular updated the change logs for its Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 models on Thursday with all the information needed about this models’ Android 4.4 update. The Galaxy Note 3 N900R4TYUCNAB build software and the Galaxy S4 R970TYUFNAE build software is now available over-the-air and through Samsung Kies, and includes such enhancements as a new phone dialer and Camera features, Hangouts and text integration, always on capability with Google now and a full emoji keyboard. A leaked document had proposed that the U.S. Cellular Galaxy Note 3 would begin on update on Feb. 19 and the actual rollout date was not of by much. The Android 4.4 update for both devices will be staggered and may take several days or weeks to complete. Users can prompt the Android 4.4 update manually by accessing Settings > General > About device > Software update on their U.S. Cellular Galaxy S4 or Galaxy Note 3 handsets.
